Established in 1984, Sankara Eye Hospital in Coimbatore was started as a small community eye care movement by the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust. Dr. R.V.Ramani and his wife, Dr. Radha Raman was very much involved to help out the people suffering from blindness.

Dr. R.V. Ramani created great awareness and explained the importance of eye donation to the masses of people in the city. At present, Sankara Eye Care Institutions (SECI) is one of the popular charitable institutions holding a track record of 34 years of service to the needy people.

The main aim of the established hospital is to eradicate curable blindness and support the underprivileged sections of the society. Sankara Eye Care Institutions has 7 eye care hospitals across India started with the motive to offer highly specialised diagnostic and surgical eye care to the visually impaired people. Build in over 5 acres land, Sankara Eye Hospital Coimbatore holds 500 bed capacity space and they have a strong network of experienced doctors, field workers, paramedics across the world.

Currently, the hospital in Coimbatore has over 36 doctors including 17 DNB students, 12 Ophthalmologists and 244 Administrative & Paramedic Staff. The super-speciality eye hospital follows the 80:20 patient ratio analysis where in 80% belongs to the underprivileged class and 20% are allotted for the paid patients. 

Sankara Eye Care Institution ensures to offer free treatment for all the economically underprivileged people located in various remote corners of the country. For this purpose, the Sankara Eye Care Institutions has created an infrastructure to offer training for a large number of ophthalmologists in Cataract Surgery and VR techniques under supervision. 

Moreover, the training programs offered by the institution are Phacoemulsification Short term Training (ophthalmologists), Vitreoretina Training (ophthalmologists), Operation Theatre Techniques Training (paramedical) and more.
