Situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Coimbatore is considered to be the fourth largest metropolis and second largest city in South India. Due to the great industrial growth, the city is often referred as the “Manchester of South India” by many tourists visiting the destination. Coimbatore holds over 25,000 textile mills, information technology industries, manufacturing industries and health care sectors. Being the capital city of Kongu Nadu region, Coimbatore covers the geographical area of 7469 sq kms. It is important to know that the city of Coimbatore was constituted as Municipality in the year of 1866.
Coimbatore district has been divided into three Revenue Divisions and six taluks that include Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Valparai, Metupalayam, Sulur and Pollachi. According to the 2011 census, the reports have estimated that the total population of Coimbatore district is 42,71,856 with 20,95,825 males and 21,76,856 females. The three revenue divisions of the district include Coimbatore, Pollachi and Tirupur. Out of these three, Coimbatore is termed to be the heritage city that is dependent on various industries. Pollachi mainly focuses on agriculture and the Tirupur city is largely based on manufacturing industries.

Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation
The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation is the civic body that plays an important part in governing the entire city. Moreover, the corporation has divided the city into 72 wards and they have grouped these wards into four Zonal Ward Committees. This government corporation is headed by a Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the Commissioner. Each of the authorities is usually nominated by the voters of the city and they are appointed to offer excellent welfare services for the people.The executive wing of the Council is headed by the Commissioner and he has the eligibility to appoint a team of officials for coordinating the activities of the corporation. City Health Officer, City Engineer, Deputy Commissioner, Corporation Education Officer, Planning Engineer are some of the executives dually appointed by the Commissioner.
